R. James Koch, MD, MS, is a Stanford-trained, fellowship-trained, double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He is the founder of Koch Facial Plastic Surgery, located in San Mateo, California.
Dr. Koch was born in Western New York and attended Colby College. From there, he obtained both his master’s degree and medical degree (graduating with cum laude honors) at the State University of New York, where he also performed his residency training.
Dr. Koch completed his specialty training with a fellowship in Advanced Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University, where his achievements earned him an appointment to the full-time faculty at the Stanford University School of Medicine. While there, he held the positions of Associate Professor, Director of the Division of Facial Plastic Surgery, Director of the Fellowship for Advanced Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and Director of the Wound Healing Laboratory. While at Stanford, he also mentored undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Koch was voted "Teacher of the Year," given the "Resident Advocate Award" by Stanford residents, and was the recipient of several grants and other awards.
He has authored two books, including the recently published medical textbook, “Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures,” 15 book chapters, and more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has also given 205 national and international lectures. In addition, Dr. Koch's expertise crosses specialty lines as he frequently gives the keynote address at Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, and Facial Plastic Surgery meetings.
Dr. Koch is a renowned expert in minimally invasive procedures such as in-office facelift, eyelift, and laser procedures. He has trained the most physicians in the in-office facelift in the country. He also has special expertise in neck lifts, browlifts, neck liposuction with skin tightening, scar revision, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), and rhinoplasty revisions. Dr. Koch's expert knowledge of wound healing serves his patients well in individualized procedure selection and through the recovery process.
Dr. Koch is a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Along with serving as the California Medical Association delegate for the California Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Society, he has also served on the Board of Directors for the California Society of Facial Plastic Surgery and the Foundation for Facial Plastic Surgery.
